Activity information

This worksheet is primarily intended for primary school teachers as a methodological teaching aid. It integrates knowledge from history, chemistry and natural sciences, and offers pupils the opportunity to understand both historical and scientific aspects of mining through practical activities.

The worksheet focuses on an interesting natural phenomenon – the blue-green coating on stones in the area of Špania Dolina, which is formed by copper minerals, particularly malachite and azurite. Pupils become familiar with their chemical composition, properties and historical uses, for example as pigments in painting.

Through tasks and experiments, pupils:

- explore the properties and significance of copper minerals (malachite, azurite),
- understand the processes of their formation and transformation in nature,
- prepare synthetic malachite from commonly available chemical substances,
- investigate the chemical properties and stability of the resulting product,
- connect knowledge from chemistry with art history and the use of pigments.

The worksheet includes:

- an introductory text with natural science and historical context,
- tasks for comprehension and application of knowledge,
- an experiment focused on the preparation and testing of malachite,
- practical tasks developing observation and critical thinking.
